The sentinel


Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola), Salmon Creek Beach, 6 August 2012

The Birds of North America account notes that Black-bellied Plovers are "wary and quick to give alarm calls," and thereby serve as sentinels for other nearby shorebirds.  Someday I'll record and post their plaintive call.
