Greenish sheen

Muir's Hairstreak (Callophrys muiri) nectaring on Western Wallflower (Erysimum capitatum)

Photographed in The Cedars (near Cazadero) on 8 April 2016

Note the greenish sheen, especially on the hind wing.  This is a feature I looked for last year (see post from 29 April 2015), but missed.  It was nice to see it!

I am not familiar with The Cedars. Is it some kind of park?

Hi, Dan,

The Cedars is a wonderful natural area in northwest Sonoma County -- it may be unfamiliar because it's not open to the public except via guided tours through groups like Landpaths and the California Native Plant Society.

Last year I posted some pictures from a field trip there. I'll be sharing some additional photos this week, but if you want to review the 2015 photos, check out my series of blog posts from April 25, 2015 through May 1, 2015 (scroll down to the bottom of the blog page to browse posts by date).

Also, Roger Raiche provided an invaluable introduction to The Cedars in a 2009 article in Fremontia. You can access that article at this website:

Very interesting-looking place, The Cedars. I'd never heard of it.
